Boss Engira Baskaran

Cast: Arya, Nayanthara, Santhanam.
Direction: Rajesh
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja

The team of Arya – Santhanam – Rajesh has successfully delivered a comic caper with little in the name of story or script. The movie stands in the strength of its dialogues and the riotous combo of Santhanam and Arya.

With the minimum budget the movie is made of, it has already garnered profits for producers and distributors.

Action King is back with an action flick. A Tamil remake of the Malayalam movie called Mayavi starring Mammooty, this movie has nothing new to offer and hence ends up leaving a faint, familiar aftertaste.

Trade Talk:
Although released on the Diwali day, the movie has not received a big opening. Rural centers could provide respite however.

Endhiran

Cast: Rajinikanth, Aishwarya Rai, Karunas, Santhanam.
Direction: Shankar
Music: AR Rahman

Shankar treads the sci-fi path, backed by the cash-rich Sun network. The result is a visual spectacle involving some of the best names in animation, makeup and graphics in world cinema. The movie also has drowned Superstar’s image in the visual extravaganza.

Trade Talk:
Having ruled the roost since its release, Endhiran is still holding court in many release centers.

Mynaa

Cast: Vidharth, Amala Paul.
Direction: Prabhu Solomon
Music: D Imman
Production:John Max

Of all the Diwali releases, it seems like Myna has the potential to stick around at the box office. Myna is an intense love story set in the backdrop of a mountain village among thickets of forest. It is also a sneak peek into the realities of human right violations meted out at prisoners.

Trade Talk:
Positive buzz is already created by movie buffs and glowing reviews. Collections are not far now.

Va Quarter Cutting

Cast: Shiva, Lekha Washington, SPB Charan.
Direction: Pushkar-Gayatri
Music: GV Prakash Kumar
Production: Sashikanth Sivaji

Va is director duo Pushkar-Gayathri’s quirky take on Chennai’s night life. It is also an expose of Chennai’s underbelly, its sleazy streets in the nights, spooky cemeteries and weirdos. Shiva, SPB Charan and Lekha play significant characters.

Trade Talk:
It is difficult to judge the movie with the initial reviews and word of mouth since they seem to showcase an inconsistent pattern, much like the movie itself.

Public Talk:
Mixed reviews

Uthama Puthiran

Cast: Dhanush, Genelia, Vivek.
Direction: Mithran R. Jawahar
Music: Vijay Antony
Production:Mohan Appa Rao

Mithran Jawahar is back with what he does best: importing yesteryear Telugu hits to Tamil. Now it is ‘Ready’ that is made with Genilia and Dhanush in the lead. The comedy is also fuelled by Vivek’s emotional Ekambaram character.

Trade Talk:
Initial responses are still pouring in and trade is still analyzing the results.

Public Talk:
Genilia is as perky and sprightly as ever!

4 Confirmed Releases this Diwali

Will Diwali 2010 light up the Kollywood box office? It is the second biggest festival season for the Tamil film industry, after Pongal.

As of now, there are 4 films lined up for this diwali. Of these, three big Tamil films will release on November 5 - Dhanush's Uthamaputhran, Prabhu Solomon's Mynaa, and Pushkar and Gayathri's VA-Quarter Cutting. Arjun's Vallakottai is also planned for release.

As far as the other films that had earlier announced their Diwali release, it seems there are no takers or theatres.

1. Dhanush's Uthamaputhiran

The film, a remake of the 2008 Telugu film Ready, stars Dhanush and Genelia D'Souza, reprising her role from the original version, in the lead roles. The supporting cast includes K. Bhagyaraj, Vivek, Karunas and R. Sundarrajan among others.

2. Va Quarter Cutting

Written and directed by Pushkar-Gayathri, the film stars Shiva, SPB Charan and Lekha Washington in the lead roles, with Kalyan, John Vijay, Abhinayashree essaying supporting roles. The film is produced by Sashikanth Sivaji of Y NOT Studios and is to be distributed by Dhayanidhi Alagiri's Cloud Nine Movies. The soundtrack and film score is composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar and cinematography is handled by Nirav Shah.

3. Mynaa

Prabu Solomon's upcoming venture, Mynaa, seems to have wowed one and all in Kollywood. Having received praise from Kamal Hassan and Bala, this movie carries enough hype into release. Mynaa, starring Anakha and Vidarth is being released by Udhayanidhi Stalin's Red Giant Movies and Kalpathi Agoram's AGS Entertainment.

4. Vallakottai

Action King's ‘Vallakottai’ is directed by A Venkatesh who is known for his commercial masala fare. Vallakottai may find it difficult to get a big opening as the other three films looks to get in with wider audience. The wider audience in sense that all other three films are different genres on their own. Vallakottai looks out to be a typical A.Venkatesh masala entertainer.

LEKHA WASHINGTON: 19 YEARS AND SUICIDAL

Lekha Washington was not seen in the Kollywood circuit after Jayamkondan. Enquiries revealed that actress was flooded with sister roles after starring in that film and hence decided not to don such roles in Kollywood. However, she shifted base to Bollywood and will soon be seen sharing the screen space with Amitabh Bachchan apart from a few other films.

The wait in Kollywood has also turned fruitful as Lekha is the main protagonist in Va – Quarter Cutting. Speaking about her role in this film, Lekha says that she plays a 19-year-old with suicidal intentions.
