Director G Kamaraj’s Vilai has a subtle message against commercial sex trade and women trafficking. The best part of it is that by trying to show exploitation of women, the director had not turned into a peeping Tom, though he had many opportunities to cash in on it.

Kamaraj has handled the film in a sensitive manner. Nandu (Bharani of Nadodigal fame) and his sister Vandana (Reethu Soni) live in village with their parents, but are always at each other’s throat. So to stop their bickering, their father arranges for Vandana’s marriage, though she is a topper. Nandu protests against this and convinces her of higher studies in Chennai.

They come to Chennai and Vandana falls into the hands of a gang of traffickers who along with other girls kidnapped by them are to be taken to neighbouring Andhra for sale! Nandu finds support from unexpected quarters, the DCP of Police Shanmughavel (Saravanan), comes to his rescue, as he has his own agenda. They reach Andhra and confront Mirchi Maya (Fatima), the dreaded female don and the queen behind the entire trafficking business.

Saravanan’s body language, style and dialogue delivery reminds you so much of ‘Captain’ Vijaykanth. Udhayathara as a Sri Lankan girl who gets kidnapped is adequate, while Bharani makes the same noises and expressions that he had in Nadodigal. Chandru as one of the toughs in the trafficking business is impressive. The music of Imman is ok.

On the whole the film is too long winded and moves at a snail pace. There is also too much mush and melodrama, towards the climax.
