NAAN MAHAAN ALLA MOVIE PREVIEW

Starring: Karthi, Kajal Agarwal
Direction: Suseendran
Music: Yuvan Shankar Raja
Production: Cloud Nine Movies

Karthi is back. After a three year gap between his first and second release, 2010 seems to be a year of expedited release strategy for Karthi with Naan Mahaan Alla being his third release of the calendar year. The other two releases this year did make quite good impressions at the box office, with Paiyaa in particular garnering the appreciation of the youth a great deal. But, this film is not only about Karthi. As the title suggests, the hero of the film is not (yet) great in his own right.
Naan Mahaan Alla is a film set completely in Chennai; one which explores the life of an ordinary middle class youngster in the city and tries to show us what can go wrong in a city which is full of spinning vortexes of crime and trouble for those who are not careful enough to avoid them. Karthi plays one such youngster, the type who is not careful enough to watch his step and forgets what he is getting into in his excitement. And, in a big city like Chennai, small mistakes can cost a lot. How does Karthi have to pay for his playful carelessness that lands him in big time trouble and how he eventually gets out of it is what Naan Mahaan Alla is all about. It is also said to portray the relationship between a father and his son in a very sensitive manner.

Naan Mahaan Alla looks like a reflection of life in the city. Having lived for years in the city, the average Chennaite might have got accustomed to the goings on in the metropolis and would have a trained instinct and eye to avoid all kinds of trouble and liabilities. This could be a slice of life film, especially for those who have grown up in the city.

Naan Mahaan Alla has been made by a team that is not hugely experienced but does have a pretty reliable look to it. Karthi has already made his mark. Director Suseendran has given us a lot of hope and promise through his debut Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu and we will be looking forward to seeing yet another good product from him. Kajal Agarwal will be looking to establish herself in Tamil after seeing some big success in Telugu over the past year.

What Harris Jayaraj has been doing for Suriya, Yuvan seems to be doing for Karthi. After delivering big musical hits in two of Karthi’s previous ventures, he joins him for a third time. The music is just out in stores and has started gaining some good opinion. But, ideally, the music should have been given some more time to catch on with the audiences before the film hit screens, which was the case for Paiyaa.

A good team, a theme that can find takers and the backing of production house as Cloud Nine, Naan Mahaan Alla does look like a candidate for box office success. But, it has got some competition. Let’s wait for Friday.
